Maruti Suzuki unveiled WagonR That Can Run On 100% Ethanol Fuel
Maruti Suzuki WagonR Flex Fuel Revealed With E100 Ethanol Support
India is preparing for wider use of ethanol-based fuels, and Maruti Suzuki has now unveiled a WagonR Flex Fuel vehicle that can run on E100 fuel. The prototype highlights the company's work on alternative fuel technologies as the country continues to expand the use of ethanol in the transport sector. Based on the familiar WagonR hatchback, the new vehicle has been modified to operate on different ethanol-petrol blends, including fuel containing up to 100 per cent ethanol.
The vehicle was unveiled in the presence of Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
What Makes This WagonR Different?
Unlike a regular petrol-powered WagonR, the Flex Fuel version has received several changes to support higher ethanol content. The engine uses upgraded fuel system components and ethanol-compatible materials. Maruti Suzuki has also revised the engine calibration to ensure smooth operation with different fuel blends.
A dedicated powertrain management system continuously monitors the ethanol content in the fuel and adjusts fuel injection and combustion settings accordingly.
What Is E100 Fuel?
Ethanol is produced from agricultural sources such as sugarcane and maize. Since it can be produced within India, higher ethanol usage can help reduce dependence on imported crude oil. Compared to conventional petrol, ethanol-based fuels can also help lower vehicle emissions.
India's Push Towards Higher Ethanol Blends
The Indian government has been actively promoting ethanol-blended fuels in recent years. E20 petrol has already become available across the country. More recently, fuel specifications for E22, E25, E27 and E30 blends were officially notified.
These measures are aimed at increasing the use of biofuels in the automotive sector and reducing the country's reliance on fossil fuels over time.
Why Maruti Suzuki Chose The WagonR
The WagonR remains one of Maruti Suzuki's highest-selling models in India. Its popularity across cities and smaller towns makes it a suitable vehicle for demonstrating new fuel technologies. By using a familiar model, the company can showcase how flex fuel technology could work in a mass-market car.
Another Option Alongside Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles continue to gain popularity, but charging infrastructure is still expanding in many parts of the country. Flex fuel vehicles are increasingly being viewed as another option that can work alongside electric vehicles, hybrids and CNG-powered models.
During the event, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said E85 fuel is expected to be introduced in the future and could be priced lower than E20 petrol. If introduced, it could encourage wider adoption of higher ethanol blends.
