Tata Motors EV Plan in India: New Sierra EV, Avinya and Future Strategy

Tata EV strategy includes new models, charging network expansion, and local battery production. Full details here.

Tata Motors is strengthening its position in India’s electric mobility space with a clear plan that includes new vehicle launches, better local production, and a stronger focus on sustainability. The company has already crossed 2.5 lakh EV sales in just five years, with the Tata Nexon EV becoming the first electric car in India to cross one lakh sales.

Upcoming Products and Portfolio Expansion

The next big launch will be the Tata Sierra EV, which is expected to arrive within the next three months. This electric SUV will carry forward the appeal of its ICE version while offering a modern EV setup. It is likely to come with two battery pack options, with a claimed range of over 500 km and support for fast charging.

In the high-volume segment, the Tata Punch EV has already received an update. The refreshed model gets cosmetic changes, interior improvements, and a longer range battery. At the top end, Tata will introduce the Avinya range as its flagship EV lineup. This range will sit above the current models and bring a new design style and advanced technology.

Although it was earlier expected before the end of this year, the first Avinya model is now likely to arrive in early 2027, possibly with a sportback-style design. Tata plans to have at least five all-new EV models in the market by FY2030, along with regular feature updates and software improvements.

Expanding the EV Ecosystem

Tata is also working on building a strong EV ecosystem. The company plans to set up nearly four lakh charging points by 2027. This will include more than 30,000 public fast chargers under its EV Open Collaboration program. At the same time, the aftersales network will grow with dedicated EV service bays and special battery repair facilities across India.

Focus on Local Manufacturing

Local manufacturing will play an important role going forward. The Agratas gigafactory in Sanand will produce high-voltage battery cells for Tata’s future EVs. This will help reduce dependence on imports, improve costs, and ensure better supply.

Commitment to Sustainability

Tata is also working on a full lifecycle approach for its EVs to improve sustainability. Plans include battery health certificates for second owners and refurbishment programs. Batteries that reach the end of their vehicle life will be reused for stationary energy storage.
