Triumph Speed T4 Spotted with Smaller Engine, Price Cut Expected in India
New Triumph Speed T4 test model hints at sub-350cc engine. Price drop likely due to tax benefits. Full details here.
A test prototype of the Triumph Speed T4 has been spotted in India, suggesting a significant update for the motorcycle. The exterior of the test model appears identical to the current version, indicating that changes are likely internal. This development is primarily driven by India’s taxation system.
India's Motorcycle Taxation Structure
Motorcycles with engine capacities above 350 cc face a 40 percent Goods and Services Tax (GST). In contrast, those with engines at or below 350 cc attract a lower 18 percent GST. This substantial tax difference directly impacts pricing, especially in a market where affordability is a key factor for buyers.
Expected Price Reduction and Market Repositioning
The updated motorcycles could become approximately Rs. 20,000 more affordable. The expected ex-showroom price for the Speed T4 might be around Rs. 1.75 lakh. Currently, Triumph’s India-focused models, including the Triumph Speed 400, Triumph Scrambler 400 X, and Triumph Thruxton 400, are all around 399 cc. This places them in the higher tax bracket. The downsizing will help reposition these motorcycles more effectively in the entry-level middleweight segment.
Strategic Engine Rework
To comply with this tax structure, Bajaj Auto and Triumph Motorcycles are expected to modify their existing engines. Instead of developing an entirely new powertrain, the current 399 cc liquid-cooled engine will likely be downsized. This will involve altering internal components, such as bore dimensions, to bring the capacity just under the 350 cc threshold. This strategy aims to control development costs while gaining a significant pricing advantage.
Performance Adjustments and Launch Timeline
Performance is expected to see a slight reduction due to the decreased engine capacity. The current output of about 40 hp and 37.5 Nm could drop to roughly 34–35 hp. However, the overall riding experience is anticipated to remain largely similar. Triumph may reveal its next range of downsized products in India around April 2026. Rajiv Bajaj has previously confirmed that new sub-350 cc motorcycles are under development.
Potential Industry Impact
The unchanged appearance of the test mule supports the idea that only the engine is being updated. This move by Triumph and Bajaj could influence other manufacturers. Brands like KTM and Bajaj might also revise their 400 cc offerings, including models from the Dominar and NS ranges, to benefit from similar tax advantages and stay competitive against rivals such as Royal Enfield in the segment.
