His parents worked long hours in the fields but could barely earn enough for one meal a day. From a young age, Chung dreamed of becoming a teacher, but his family’s financial condition forced him to start working early.

He worked in small jobs in his village, but they did not pay much. Life was hard, and Chung wanted to do something big to help his family. So, at the age of 16, he ran away from home with a friend to find work in the city. After walking for many kilometers, they reached a small town called Kowon, where he found a job as a construction laborer.

Just when things started going well, World War II began. The Japanese army took control of all factories and workshops to produce military supplies. Chung’s business was taken away once again.

After the war ended in 1945, Chung returned to Seoul and opened his garage again, but with a new name and a bigger dream. With his experience and confidence, he started growing fast. He believed that when a business reaches a certain level, it should expand into new areas.

He started taking construction projects and contracts. In 1950, when a war broke out between North and South Korea, the country needed to rebuild roads, bridges, and buildings. This helped his company get more government contracts for infrastructure projects. His business grew rapidly, building roads, tunnels, bridges, and dams across South Korea. Later, he expanded into shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing, finance, and electronics. This was the beginning of Hyundai Group, which became one of the biggest companies in the world.
