Toyota Urban Cruiser BEV Revealed in Indonesia, India Launch Expected Soon
Toyota Urban Cruiser BEV was introduced in Indonesia with a 61.1 kWh battery and 426.7 km range.
Toyota has entered Indonesia’s growing electric vehicle market with the launch of the Urban Cruiser BEV at GJAW 2025. This new electric SUV is positioned below the larger bZ4X and serves as a more compact and affordable option for buyers. While the bZ4X is locally assembled in Indonesia, the Urban Cruiser BEV is currently being sold as a fully imported model. The move signals Toyota’s intention to expand its electric lineup in Southeast Asia before shifting focus to other key markets.
Pricing and Key Specifications
The Urban Cruiser BEV is priced at IDR 759 million OTR Jakarta, which converts to roughly Rs 40.78 lakh. It uses a 61.1 kWh battery pack with a claimed range of 426.7 km on a single charge. Power comes from an electric motor that produces 172 hp and 192 Nm of torque. Toyota offers its T Intouch connected car system on both the Urban Cruiser BEV and the bZ4X. This system lets owners check the vehicle’s status and control select functions remotely through an app.
Why This Matters for India
The launch of the Urban Cruiser BEV is especially important for India, because this model is expected to become Toyota’s first fully electric SUV for the Indian market. It was showcased earlier in India at BMGE in January 2025, giving a preview of what to expect. The SUV is built on the Heartect e platform, the same architecture used for the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara. Both vehicles share components and are produced at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility. With the e Vitara heading for launch next month, Toyota is likely to introduce the Urban Cruiser BEV in India during the first half of 2026. Once launched, it will compete in the midsize electric SUV segment.
Comparison with the bZ4X
Toyota also shared pricing details for the bZ4X in Indonesia. The larger SUV is priced at IDR 799 million, roughly Rs 42.93 lakh. It uses a bigger 73.11 kWh battery and delivers a longer range of 525 km along with 221 hp and 268 Nm of torque. The bZ4X also offers additional connected features that include an onboard Wi Fi hotspot and a remote immobiliser. These differences explain the higher pricing and position the Urban Cruiser BEV as the more accessible option in the lineup.
Deep Analysis: Toyota’s Strategy for India’s EV Market
Toyota’s decision to introduce the Urban Cruiser BEV through a shared platform approach with Maruti Suzuki is a calculated strategy. By using the same Heartect e platform and producing the SUV at Suzuki’s plant, Toyota benefits from lower manufacturing costs and faster rollout timelines. This move helps the company enter the Indian EV segment without carrying the full burden of developing a standalone product. The Urban Cruiser BEV’s range of 426.7 km and its 61.1 kWh battery are well aligned with consumer expectations in the midsize EV category. The expected 2026 launch positions Toyota to take advantage of rising demand for electric SUVs while keeping pricing competitive. This partnership-driven strategy allows Toyota to strengthen its EV presence in India with a proven platform and a name that buyers already trust.
