Jaecoo J5 EV Spied Testing in India, Could Become JSW Motors’ Upcoming Electric SUV

JSW Group is entering the car business in India through a new company called JSW Motors. It will begin by selling vehicles developed by the Chinese automaker Chery Auto, but they will be sold under the JSW brand. The first model is expected to be a rebadged version of the Jetour T2, while the second will likely be a rebadged Jaecoo J5 EV electric SUV.

What Is the Jaecoo J5 EV?

The Jaecoo J5 EV is an electric mid-size SUV from China that looks similar to the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Evoque. The SUV has already been spotted testing in India.

In terms of size, the J5 EV measures 4,380 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height. Its wheelbase — the distance between the front and rear wheels — is 2,620 mm.

Design and Look

The Jaecoo J5 EV features a modern electric vehicle design. Since it is fully electric, the upper grille area is closed because it does not require as much cooling as petrol-powered vehicles.

The SUV rides on 18-inch aerodynamic wheels. At the front, it gets rectangular headlamps that sweep slightly backward. Along the sides, the beltline rises gently while the roof slopes toward the rear. The back of the vehicle features a sharply angled rear windscreen and slim, modern-looking tail lamps. Together, these elements give the SUV a dynamic and contemporary appearance.

Inside the Car

Inside, the Jaecoo J5 EV offers a simple and modern cabin with a strong focus on digital technology. The dashboard follows a horizontal layout with a flat upper section and small air vents.

Behind the steering wheel sits an 8-inch digital instrument cluster that displays key driving information. The main infotainment screen measures 13.2 inches and is positioned vertically. This portrait-style display connects visually with the center console, creating a waterfall-style design.

In international markets, the J5 EV comes with several premium features. These include a 1.45-square-meter panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats with multiple adjustments, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 50-watt wireless phone charger.

Safety features include a 360-degree camera system, transparent chassis view, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and six airbags.

Engine and Performance

Powering the Jaecoo J5 EV is a single front-mounted electric motor that produces 155 kW (208 hp) and 288 Nm of torque.

Energy comes from a 58.9 kWh LFP battery pack. With this setup, the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 175 km/h. On a full charge, it offers a driving range of up to 402 km according to WLTP standards.

Price and Launch Date

Parth Jindal, director at JSW Energy and a key executive involved with JSW Cement and JSW Paints, said in an interview that JSW Motors plans to launch its second vehicle in January 2027.

The expected price range is ₹15 lakh to ₹20 lakh. Although Jindal did not directly confirm the model name, he was referring to the rebadged Jaecoo J5 EV.

Competition in the Market

In India, the Jaecoo J5 EV will compete with other electric SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta Electric and Maruti e Vitara. These models target the same segment of buyers looking for practical electric SUVs.

Pricing between ₹15 lakh and ₹20 lakh will be important, as it places the SUV directly against these rivals in one of the fastest-growing EV segments in the country.
