TVS Developing Premium 160cc Maxi-Scooter to Rival Yamaha Aerox 155
TVS 160cc Maxi-Scooter Under Development, Launch Expected Next Year
TVS Motor Company is reportedly working on a new 160cc maxi-scooter for the Indian market. The upcoming model is expected to sit above the Ntorq range and could become the most powerful scooter in the company's lineup. A launch is expected sometime next year.
The new scooter is likely to compete with rivals such as the Yamaha Aerox 155 and Hero Xoom 160. The segment could become even more competitive in the coming years, as the Honda ADV160 and Yamaha NMax 155 are also expected to arrive in India within the next 12 to 18 months.
A New Look for a Powerful Scooter
Even though the new scooter could borrow some styling cues from the Ntorq range, it is expected to have a more mature maxi-scooter design. This means it could be larger and more comfortable for longer rides. A wider front section, a tall windscreen and a stepped seat are also expected.
Maxi-scooters are becoming popular because they are suitable for both city riding and highway trips. They offer the comfort of a scooter while providing the touring ability of a motorcycle.
Engine and Performance
Power is expected to come from a new liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with a displacement close to 160cc. While official specifications are not available yet, the engine could produce around 15 hp to 18 hp and between 14 Nm and 16 Nm of torque.
This would make it a direct rival to the Yamaha Aerox 155. A CVT automatic transmission is likely to be offered as standard. TVS could also use technology from its motorcycle range to improve performance and the overall riding experience.
Modern Features and Technology
TVS is known for offering several modern features, and the new maxi-scooter is expected to continue that trend. Here are some features that could be offered:
- Digital Screen: A fully digital TFT instrument cluster with riding information.
- Connectivity: Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, and call and message alerts.
- Safety: Dual-channel ABS and traction control could be offered on higher variants.
- Smart Key: A smart key system may also be available for added convenience.
- Riding Modes: Multiple riding modes could be included to suit different riding conditions.
Comfort and Practicality
The new 160cc scooter is expected to ride on larger wheels and a stronger chassis than the Ntorq 125. Telescopic front forks and twin rear shock absorbers are likely, although a rear monoshock setup cannot be ruled out.
The scooter could also offer a large under-seat storage compartment capable of holding a full-face helmet. Other expected features include USB charging ports and generous floorboard space. TVS may also offer accessories such as a top box, windscreen extensions and luggage solutions.
Expected Price
If TVS prices the scooter between ₹1.40 lakh and ₹1.50 lakh (ex-showroom), it could emerge as an attractive option in the premium scooter segment. TVS is expected to enter a growing segment with this new maxi-scooter. If launched with competitive pricing, modern features and strong performance, it could become an important product for the company and a strong rival to the Yamaha Aerox 155 and Hero Xoom 160.
