5 Upcoming Compact SUVs in India 2026-27: Hyundai, Tata, Kia, VW
A look at upcoming compact SUVs in India including Tata Punch EV facelift, VW compact SUV, Hyundai HE1i and Renault Mini Duster.
The compact SUV segment in India is already very popular, but it is going to become even more crowded and exciting. Over the next two years, from 2026 to 2027, many major automobile companies are planning to launch new models. These will include traditional petrol cars as well as a strong focus on electric vehicles. Brands like Hyundai, Tata, Kia, Volkswagen and Renault are getting ready to introduce fresh options for buyers. Let us take a closer look at these five upcoming compact SUVs.
1. Renault Mini Duster: A Strong New Look
Renault is preparing to introduce a new sub-four-meter SUV for India, which will be positioned below the upcoming new generation Duster. This vehicle, sometimes called the Mini Duster, will be very different from the curvy design of the Kiger. Instead, it will take inspiration from the bigger Duster and have a more upright and boxy shape. You can expect a long front end, bold wheel arches and tough looking body cladding. In terms of engine, it is likely to use the familiar 1.0 liter turbo petrol engine that is currently available in the Kiger, paired with manual and CVT gearbox options. This new model could arrive as early as next year.
2. Volkswagen Compact SUV: A New Entry
Volkswagen is finally entering the highly competitive compact SUV market in India. A new model is expected to be launched around mid-2027. This SUV will use the MQB A0 IN platform just like the Kylaq, but it will not be just a rebadged version. Instead, it will have its own unique design and identity. It will be powered by a 1.0 liter TSI turbo petrol engine that produces 114 bhp and 178 Nm of torque. This launch will be an important step for Volkswagen to gain a stronger position in this key segment.
3. Tata Punch EV Facelift: Ready with a Fresh Look
Tata Motors has already given us a preview of the updated Punch EV facelift ahead of its official launch on February 20, 2026. This electric micro SUV takes design inspiration from the Harrier EV and features a more upright front with a closed off grille. The front bumper has been redesigned and gets a new scuff plate. Other highlights include aero alloy wheels similar to those on the Nexon EV and a new yellow color option with a contrasting black roof. The mechanical parts will remain the same, offering the existing 25 kWh and 35 kWh battery options, while the interior will get more premium equipment and advanced technology.
4. Hyundai Compact Electric SUV (HE1i): Made for India
Hyundai is actively working on a compact electric SUV designed specially for the Indian market, internally called the HE1i. It is confirmed to launch in 2027. This new EV will fit into the sub-four-meter category and will take its basic structure and overall shape from the global Inster concept. However, it will be well adapted to Indian conditions. Hyundai plans to offer two battery options, with the standard setup expected to deliver a real world range of around 300 to 350 kilometers.
5. Kia Syros EV: Electrifying the Entry Level Segment
Kia is also likely to enter the entry level electric SUV space in the near future with a model based on the Syros. This vehicle may take design inspiration from concepts like the EV2. Like its Hyundai cousin, it is expected to offer two battery pack options. The cabin will be filled with modern features, aiming to provide an attractive electric option for urban buyers.
