Honda Begins Nationwide Testing Of Upcoming 0 α Electric SUV In India

Honda Cars India has begun a nationwide testing programme for its upcoming electric SUV called the 0 α. This model will become the brand’s first fully electric vehicle for the Indian market. The prototype has now started public road verification trials across the country. The testing programme was flagged off from Tapukara, Rajasthan, where Honda runs its manufacturing facility.

Testing Programme Details

Senior members of Honda’s leadership team in India attended the launch of the testing programme. Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO of Honda Cars India, was present at the ceremony. The prototype will now travel through different regions of the country. Honda will study how the vehicle performs in various real-world driving conditions.

The vehicle was first shown globally as the Honda 0 α concept at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 held last year. The production version is expected to make its international debut around 2027. India is expected to be one of the early launch markets. The production-ready Honda 0 α is likely to arrive in India sometime next year.

Testing Evaluation Areas

During the testing phase, Honda engineers will analyse the prototype in many types of driving environments. Areas such as ride comfort, handling, efficiency, durability and overall reliability will be closely evaluated. The vehicle will also be tested in challenging weather conditions including extreme summer heat and monsoon rains. Honda will also check how well the SUV works with different charging networks.

Global Strategy

The model forms an important part of Honda’s next-generation electric vehicle plan. It will be developed for global markets including Japan. The SUV will also be produced locally for both domestic sales and export markets.

Battery And Range

The electric SUV is expected to be available with two battery pack options. The estimated driving range is expected to be more than 500 km on a single charge.

Design And Styling

The Honda 0 α follows the company’s “Thin, Light and Wise” engineering philosophy. The SUV has a sleek yet upright shape. The test prototype shows some differences compared with the earlier concept. The front grille appears larger and wider. The stacked lighting elements and bumper design remain similar to the concept, although the horizontal LED DRL is not visible.

Other design highlights include large wheel arches, tall pillars, a wide bonnet, turn indicators integrated into the ORVMs and dual-tone wheels. Honda’s “Thin” packaging concept allows the cabin to remain slimmer while still offering good interior space.

Executive Statement

Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO of Honda Cars India, said the start of pan-India Public Road Verification testing marks an important step in Honda’s electrification journey. India has unique road conditions and climate challenges, making real-world testing necessary. The programme reflects Honda’s global engineering capability combined with attention to local customer requirements. Honda is preparing to introduce an electric SUV designed to deliver reliability, comfort and ease of use.
