Record Break: India Registers Over 20 Million Two-Wheelers in FY26

India’s two-wheeler industry has reached a major milestone as FY26 comes to an end. For the first time ever, registrations have crossed 20 million units, highlighting the strength and scale of this key segment of the economy. According to VAHAN data, total registrations stood at 20.05 million units. This is well above the pre-Covid peak of 18.4 million in FY19 and also higher than the 18.3 million recorded in FY25. The numbers clearly show that the market has not only recovered but moved beyond its earlier highs.

A Steady Climb Back to Growth

This achievement is the result of a gradual and consistent recovery over the past few years. The market grew from 15.3 million units in 2022 to over 20 million units in 2025, showing a steady return of demand.

Instead of a sudden spike, the industry has built momentum step by step. This makes the current milestone more meaningful, as it reflects stable and sustained growth across different regions.

What Is Driving This Growth

Several key factors have supported this strong performance:

  • Higher disposable income in important markets has improved buying capacity
  • A good monsoon has supported rural demand and confidence
  • Financial pressure in rural areas has reduced compared to earlier years
  • Loan availability has remained stable, making purchases easier

Together, these factors have brought more customers back into showrooms and supported overall demand.

Scooters and Daily Commuters Lead Demand

Scooters have played a major role in pushing overall numbers higher, while commuter motorcycles continue to contribute large volumes. These segments remain the backbone of India’s two-wheeler market.

Demand stayed consistent throughout FY26, with both rural and urban markets contributing. Festive buying also added momentum, especially during the third quarter and towards the end of the year. December 2025 stood out as a particularly strong month for sales.

Electric Two-Wheelers Are Growing, But Slowly

Electric two-wheelers are gaining traction, but they still account for a small share of the total market. By the end of FY26, EV penetration stood at just over 6 percent, indicating that the shift to electric is still in its early phase.

In the first half of FY26, electric two-wheeler registrations increased by about 18 percent year-on-year, reaching 5,82,027 units compared to 4,92,586 units in the same period last year.

However, the segment is not without challenges. Supply-side issues, such as shortages of rare-earth magnets, along with intense competition among manufacturers, have created some pressure in the market.

Even with this growth, petrol-powered two-wheelers continue to dominate customer preference across most regions.
