2027 MG Starlight Hybrid SUV Spotted Testing in India: What We Know So Far
JSW MG Motor has started testing a new car for the Indian market. This will be their first new model since the launch of the MG Windsor in September 2024. The upcoming model is currently known by its codename, ‘MG 520’.
It will be an SUV positioned above the MG Hector. The model is expected to be offered in two versions: a plug-in hybrid (petrol + electric) and a pure electric version.
What is the MG 520?
The upcoming MG SUV is based on the Wuling Starlight 560, which is sold in international markets. JSW MG Motor will introduce it in India under its own branding.
The official name for the Indian market has not been confirmed yet, so it is currently being referred to as the MG Starlight 560.
What the Test Car Looks Like
The test vehicle appears to be the plug-in hybrid version. This is indicated by the large front grille with a honeycomb pattern, which is commonly seen on hybrid models.The SUV also gets rectangular headlights, similar to the Starlight 560 sold globally.
Inside the MG 520 and Its Features
Globally, the Starlight 560 is available in both 5-seat and 7-seat configurations, and MG could offer both options in India.
The SUV is expected to come with several premium features, including:
- LED lighting at the front and rear
- 18-inch alloy wheels
- Panoramic sunroof
- Electrically adjustable front seats with ventilation
- 360-degree camera
- Level 2 ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems)
Power Options: Plug-in Hybrid
The plug-in hybrid version of the MG Starlight 560 combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, both powering the front wheels.
The petrol engine produces 78 kW (105 hp) and 130 Nm of torque, while the electric motor delivers 145 kW (194 hp) and 230 Nm of torque.
It uses a 20.5 kWh battery pack, offering a claimed electric-only range of up to 125 km (CLTC) and the top speed is 170 km/h.
Power Options: Pure Electric
The pure electric version uses a different front-mounted electric motor. It produces 100 kW (134 hp) and 200 Nm of torque.
Power comes from a larger 56.7 kWh battery pack, which offers a claimed range of up to 500 km (CLTC) and the top speed is 160 km/h.
The India-spec version is expected to get a more powerful motor and possibly a larger battery pack.
When Will It Launch?
JSW MG Motor is expected to launch this SUV in the last quarter of this year. The pure electric version could compete with models like the Tata Harrier.ev in the Indian market.
