8 Upcoming Hybrid Cars In India Expected To Launch Before 2027
Upcoming Hybrid Cars In India That Could Launch Between 2026 And 2027
Hybrid cars are expected to become more popular in India as car makers look for alternatives to petrol, diesel and fully electric vehicles. In the coming years, several brands are expected to introduce new hybrid and plug-in hybrid models in the country, including Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, BYD and the JSW Group.
Right now, Toyota and Maruti Suzuki dominate the segment in terms of strong-hybrid cars with models like the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Grand Vitara, and Innova Hycross. Honda also sells its City e. However, there are multiple other hybrid cars that are expected to arrive in India in 2026 and 2027.
1. Kia Sorento Hybrid
The Kia Sorento Hybrid will probably become one of the company's most popular models in India. Globally, this is a full-size three-row SUV featuring a turbo-petrol hybrid system under the hood.
If launched in India, the Sorento Hybrid could rival models such as the Toyota Fortuner, Jeep Meridian and Skoda Kodiaq. As of now, Kia has not officially announced this car's launch, but there are rumors.
2. Kia Carnival Hybrid
Along with the Sorento Hybrid, another model under consideration in India could be the Carnival Hybrid. Right now, the latest-gen Carnival occupies the luxury MPV class and adding a hybrid powertrain can increase fuel economy for the model.
Like the rest of the Kia cars, the Carnival also offers a turbo-petrol engine combined with an electric motor. If introduced in India, it could appeal to buyers looking for a spacious MPV for family or business use.
3. Hyundai's First Hybrid Vehicle
Another interesting car set to come to India from South Korea next year will be the first hybrid model from Hyundai. At this point, it is not clear whether the company will launch a hybrid vehicle in India before 2027, but it seems that a SUV model is being considered.
The hybrid powertrain could offer better fuel efficiency while reducing the company's dependence on diesel engines. Further information on this car is expected soon.
4. Renault Duster Hybrid
The new-gen Renault Duster is set to debut in the second half of 2026 around the festive period. Alongside petrol variants, Renault is also considering offering a hybrid version of the compact SUV.
In overseas markets, the Renault Duster has been available in a full-hybrid configuration using a petrol engine along with the electric motors and a small battery pack.
This system allows the SUV to run on electric power at lower speeds under certain conditions, while the petrol engine helps during acceleration and longer journeys. The arrival of the Renault Duster Hybrid can challenge the likes of Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara.
5. Renault Bigster Hybrid
Following up on the launch of the new-gen Renault Duster, the larger Bigster model is also expected to be offered with a hybrid powertrain. Like the Duster, the Bigster is expected to be an important model for Renault and will come in a larger package with a stronger road presence.
Depending on its features, the Renault Bigster can rival the likes of the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari, Hyundai Alcazar, and Toyota Innova Hycross SUVs.
6. Nissan Tekton Hybrid
One of the highly anticipated products from Nissan is the mid-size Tekton SUV. It is set to share its platform with the upcoming Renault Duster, but will carry unique styling elements and a redesigned cabin.
There are reports suggesting that Nissan might go ahead with the development of a hybrid version of this SUV. With this model, Nissan can expand its lineup further to target buyers beyond the Magnite SUV. This SUV will also arrive after the launch of Renault Duster.
7. BYD Seal U DM-i / Sealion 6
One of the new entrants in India's plug-in hybrid space will be the Seal U DM-i. Also known as the Sealion 6 in other parts of the world, this BYD crossover offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain which is quite different from traditional hybrids.
Unlike a regular hybrid, the Seal U DM-i uses a larger battery that can be charged externally. In certain variants, BYD is claiming up to 1,200 km of combined range while in all-electric mode it can even travel using only electric power for up to around 50 km. The arrival of this model can be expected sometime before 2027.
8. JSW's First Plug-In Hybrid SUV
JSW's first passenger car is scheduled for launch between January to March 2027. According to reports, the JSW Group plans to develop this SUV as a plug-in hybrid using international collaboration.
It is unclear at this point whether the JSW Group will partner up with an existing automaker or not, but regardless of that, this SUV can become a key product in the company's independent line-up. With this model, the JSW Group could offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain that allows electric-only driving for daily commutes.
Why Hybrid Cars?
Hybrid vehicles can offer better fuel efficiency without depending on charging infrastructure. For example, residents living in apartments and people taking long commutes will find this type of powertrain much more convenient compared to full EVs.
Moreover, manufacturers are facing tighter fuel-efficiency standards and at the same time, diesel engines are becoming costlier. Therefore, they have started relying more and more on hybrids.
Strong Hybrid vs Plug-In Hybrid
Strong hybrids use a petrol engine, electric motor and a small battery. They recharge themselves automatically and do not need to be plugged in.
Unlike strong hybrids, a plug-in hybrid uses a bigger battery that can get charged independently. Because of this, a plug-in hybrid can go a little farther using pure electricity, but also tends to be pricier due to the larger battery pack.
In coming years, new launches from Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, BYD, and JSW will make the hybrid segment more competitive. Even though electric vehicles will continue to grow, hybrids could attract buyers looking for better efficiency without worrying about charging stations.
