BYD Aims To Become World’s Largest Car Maker by 2031, Takes Aim AT Toyota

BYD Targets Global No 1

BYD Sets Ambitious Goal to Overtake Toyota and Become the World's Largest Carmaker by 2031

The chairman of BYD, Wang Chuanfu, has shared a huge goal for his company during a meeting with shareholders in Shenzhen on June 9. He said BYD will become the biggest car maker in the world within five years, directly challenging Toyota, which currently holds the top spot.

Massive Gap Between BYD and Toyota

To reach this goal, BYD has to do lot of hard work. In 2025, Toyota sold 11.3 million vehicles while BYD sold 4.8 million vehicles during the same year which means Toyota sold more than twice as many cars as BYD.

For BYD to catch up by 2030 or 2031, it must grow much faster than it has in the past. It would need to add about 6.7 million more sales to its yearly total. This is roughly equal to the total yearly sales of major car makers like GM or Stellantis. In simple terms, BYD would need to increase its sales by around 145% to match Toyota's current level.

How BYD Plans To Grow

Wang Chuanfu believes two main things will help BYD reach the top:

  • New Battery Technology: BYD is working on its second-generation blade battery.

  • Fast Charging: The company wants to make charging much quicker for its customers.

BYD plans to spend about £1.8 billion to build very fast chargers in Europe. These "five-minute flash chargers" could help people feel better about buying electric cars. The company wants to grow its sales in China and also in other places like Europe, South-East Asia, and South America. Even if Toyota's sales slow down slightly during the shift to electric vehicles, BYD would still need very strong growth to reach the top position.

Challenges For The Future

Reaching this target will not be easy, as the car market in China is becoming very competitive. Also, some countries are putting extra taxes on electric cars from China. While BYD has grown very quickly from a domestic EV specialist to a global brand in less than a decade, the next step is harder.

In many countries, older car brands have been around for a long time. These brands have many dealers and a lot of trust from customers and also they have strong financing and service networks that help attract buyers. BYD is still new in many of these markets and has fewer car models to offer.

A Message to the World

The chairman’s statement was also meant for investors. BYD's stock price has been under pressure lately, and this news could help make investors feel more confident. While the company did not give more details to the media, the message is clear. BYD wants to become one of the world's leading car makers and is sending a strong signal to Toyota and Volkswagen that it does not plan to slow down.
