BYD Seal U Hybrid SUV Confirmed for India With 1,200 km Range
BYD Seal U is heading to India with DM-i hybrid technology, a claimed 1,200 km range, premium features
BYD, the Chinese car giant, has officially confirmed that its first plug-in hybrid SUV will launch in India later this year. The SUV is called the Seal U, but in some markets, it is also known as the Sealion 6. What makes this car very special is its "DM-i" hybrid technology, which is very popular around the world.
What is DM-i Technology?
The DM-i technology stands for "Dual Mode Intelligent." Most hybrid cars in India use the petrol engine as the main power source. But BYD’s system is different because it is "electric-first."
This means the electric motor does most of the driving, especially in the city. The petrol engine mainly acts as a generator to charge the battery when it gets low. When you are driving fast on the highway, the petrol engine can also help power the wheels directly. The engine also continues helping recharge the battery pack.
Because it is a plug-in hybrid, you can also charge the battery using a wall charger or a fast charger. This means you can drive on just electric power for your daily trips to work and still have the petrol engine for long journeys.
Sharp and Futuristic Design
The BYD Seal U looks very modern and futuristic. It is a large SUV, measuring 4,775 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height. It has a long wheelbase of 2,765 mm, which means there is plenty of space inside.
At the front, it has sleek LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs and a sporty-looking bumper. The bumper also gets parking sensors and cameras. On the sides, it features 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and pull-type door handles. At the back, there is a full-width LED light bar that connects the tail lamps. It also gets an integrated roof spoiler, giving it a sporty look.
Engine and Driving Range
The Seal U uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine along with two electric motors and BYD’s famous Blade battery. This system gives the car a total driving range of 1,200 km. You can also drive for up to 200 km on just electric power. The petrol engine only starts working once the battery level drops to 25%.
Premium Interior and Features
Inside, the Seal U feels very high-end. You can choose between two-tone color themes like tan and black or off-white and black. The dashboard uses soft-touch materials and silver trim to make it look fancy.
The SUV also comes with leatherette upholstery and a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel.
Here are some of the top features:
- Large Screens: It has a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen that can rotate, and a 12.3-inch digital screen for the driver.
- Comfort: It comes with a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, and a 10-speaker premium sound system.
- Technology: Wireless connectivity features, connected car technology, and a 360-degree camera system.
- Safety: The car has seven airbags as standard, front and rear parking sensors, and smart safety features (ADAS) to help you drive safely.
Competition in India
When the BYD Seal U launches, it will compete with other premium SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner, Jeep Meridian, Volkswagen Tayron, and Skoda Kodiaq. However, because it is a plug-in hybrid, it offers something unique that its rivals do not have.
