Tata Motors retained its lead in India's EV market as electric car sales surged 81.2% in May 2026

The electric car market in India is growing quickly, with total sales reaching 26,682 units in May 2026, an 81.2% increase compared to the same month last year. According to the latest data from FADA, demand for electric vehicles (EVs) is rising every month, with sales also growing by 2% compared to April 2026.

Tata Motors continues to be the Top electric car seller in India. In May 2026, the company sold 10,340 units, which is more than double what it sold in May 2025. This massive 103.4% growth was driven by the popularity of models like the Tiago EV, Punch EV, and Nexon EV. Tata Motors now accounts for almost 39% of all electric cars sold in the country.

Mahindra also recorded strong growth in the EV segment by selling 6,210 units last month which represents a 114.8% increase compared to May 2025. Models such as the XEV 9e, BE 6, and the three-row XEV 9S have helped the company strengthen its position in the electric SUV market.

JSW MG Motor India took the third spot with 4,984 units, mainly because of the Windsor EV. Even though its sales were slightly lower than in April, the company still recorded an 8.4% increase compared to the same period last year.

Maruti Suzuki came in fourth with 1,591 units, helped by the strong initial response to the new e Vitara. VinFast, the new company from Vietnam, took the fifth spot with 1,238 units as it continued expanding its presence in India with the VF series of electric SUVs.

Among the premium car makers, BMW sold 352 units, which is a 75.1% increase compared to last year. Mercedes-Benz also performed well with 208 units and recorded a 76.3% month-on-month increase. BYD registered 686 units, showing steady growth of 10.5%. On the other hand, Hyundai recorded 460 units, while Kia sold 349 units during the month.

Tesla, which recently entered the Indian market, registered 35 units in May. Volvo recorded 29 units, down 19.4% from last year, while Stellantis registered 22 units, reflecting a decline of 82.9%.
