Maruti Suzuki Opens New Kharkhoda Plant In Haryana With 5 Lakh Unit Annual Capacity

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has opened its new vehicle manufacturing facility at IMT Kharkhoda in Haryana. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi inaugurated the plant through video conferencing during the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum. The facility spans 800 acres and includes an integrated supplier park alongside the main manufacturing complex.

The plant begins operations with an annual production capacity of five lakh units. Maruti Suzuki plans to double this to 10 lakh units as the facility expands in the coming years.

Built On The Suzuki Smart Factory Concept

The Kharkhoda plant has been developed under Suzuki's Smart Factory concept and follows Industry 5.0 manufacturing practices. Maruti Suzuki says advanced digital technologies at the facility allow real-time monitoring across production operations, helping improve safety, product quality and manufacturing efficiency.

The factory also uses human-aware collaborative robots, referred to as COBOTS, which are designed to work alongside employees on the assembly line.

Scale, Investment And Jobs

Once the Kharkhoda facility reaches its full planned capacity, it is expected to become one of the largest automobile manufacturing plants in the world. Maruti Suzuki plans to invest Rs 35,000 crore in the project overall. The completed plant is also expected to create more than 21,000 jobs.

The new facility is a key part of Maruti Suzuki's broader target of achieving four million units of annual production capacity. With Kharkhoda now operational and a fourth production line being added at the Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, the company's total installed annual production capacity is expected to reach 2.9 million units during the current financial year.

Capacity Across All Plants

Manufacturing Facility Annual Capacity
Gurugram 5 Lakh Units
Manesar 9 Lakh Units
Hansalpur 7.5 Lakh Units
Kharkhoda (Current) 5 Lakh Units
Kharkhoda (Future) 10 Lakh Units
Total Capacity Expected by FY2026-27 29 Lakh Units

Renewable Energy And Sustainability

Sustainability has been built into the Kharkhoda facility from the ground up. The plant meets its full electricity requirement through renewable energy, combining on-site solar generation with green power procurement. The facility currently has 20 MWp of installed solar capacity, with plans to scale this up to 70 MWp by 2030.

A 10-tonne-per-day biogas plant and a 1 MWh battery energy storage system are also being set up at the site. The facility operates as a zero liquid discharge plant, meaning all wastewater generated during manufacturing is recycled and reused. Close to two-thirds of the plant's total water requirement is met through recycled water and rainwater harvesting.

An in-plant railway siding is also being developed to make vehicle dispatch more efficient while reducing road congestion and fuel consumption in the surrounding area.

What Suzuki Said At The Inauguration

Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki said at the inauguration that the new plant reflects the growing partnership between India and Japan and the progress of the Make in India initiative. He also pointed out that the e-Vitara, Suzuki's first battery-electric vehicle, is manufactured exclusively in India and exported to around 100 international markets. He added that India-made vehicles have helped Suzuki become the largest car importer into Japan.

Skill Development Alongside The New Plant

Maruti Suzuki has also expanded its technical training programmes alongside the new facility. The company currently runs four Japan-India Institutes for Manufacturing (JIMs), which have trained around 2,600 students. Hostel facilities are being planned at the Sonipat and Manesar centres to support students who require residential technical training.

One Thing Worth Knowing About The New Plant

Although the Kharkhoda facility was officially inaugurated this week, production had already started earlier. The first production line began building the Brezza in February 2025, while a second line became operational in May 2026 and added the Victoris. That means vehicles from this plant have already been reaching customers for several months. Maruti Suzuki has also approved a third production unit at the site, which will increase annual capacity further as the company moves towards its long-term 10 lakh-unit target.
