Toyota 7-Seater Hyryder Spotted in Ladakh, AWD and Hybrid Likely
Toyota Hyryder test mule has been spotted in Ladakh. Learn about the expected AWD system, 3-row layout, and hybrid engine options.
Toyota is preparing a bigger version of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Recent spy shots show a three-row version of the SUV testing in Ladakh. The high-altitude location suggests Toyota is carefully testing performance and durability before launch. This sighting confirms that Toyota and Maruti Suzuki are actively working on a 7-seater model.
Longer Body with More Cabin Space
The test vehicle was covered in heavy camouflage, but its longer body was clearly visible. The rear section looks extended to fit a third row of seats. This change should improve space for larger families.
The front design will likely stay similar to the current model. It should continue with the Crystal Acrylic grille and slim LED headlamps. The rear section will likely receive a redesigned tailgate and new LED tail lamps to match the longer profile.
Inside, Toyota is expected to offer a flexible 6- or 7-seat layout. Based on current market trends, the SUV may offer captain seats in the second row in higher variants. This layout is popular in India’s three-row SUV segment.
AWD Variant Under Testing
One important detail stands out in the spy images. The test vehicle appears to have rear axle components. This strongly indicates that Toyota is testing an All Wheel Drive system.
Currently, the 5-seater Hyryder offers AWD only with the 1.5-litre mild hybrid petrol engine and manual gearbox. If Toyota introduces AWD in the 7-seater version, it will offer better traction and stability, especially in hilly and rough terrain.
Testing in Ladakh further supports this possibility. Manufacturers often choose extreme weather locations to test drivetrain strength, cooling efficiency, and suspension durability.

Expected Engine Options
The new 7-seater model is expected to use the same engine options as the current Hyryder.
These include:
- 1.5-litre strong hybrid petrol engine
- 1.5-litre mild hybrid petrol engine
The strong hybrid system is well known for excellent fuel efficiency and smooth city performance. It combines a petrol engine with an electric motor for better mileage. Toyota’s hybrid technology has already proven reliable in Indian conditions.
Buyers can expect both manual and automatic transmission options, depending on the variant.
Launch Timeline and Competition
Toyota may launch the 7-seater Hyryder around the festive season this year. Once launched, it will compete with popular three-row SUVs such as:
- Mahindra XUV700
- Tata Safari
- Hyundai Alcazar
It will also rival the upcoming 7-seater version of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara.
The strong hybrid option could give Toyota a clear advantage because most competitors offer only petrol or diesel engines.
